A four year old, a baby, and working with the foster care system. How many feet will we end up with?

2 weeks, no pictures!
Wow--I just installed my camera software on this computer and transferred ALL Isla's pics. I haven't taken ANY pictures of her for 2 weeks! We'll be sure and correct that this week--after all, we'll have to do the 7 month Winston pictures in a few days.
Here are some of the more recent favorites and a video. They may have to be done in more than one post.

And more...
Seeing her accomplish something she's been working at. At this stage, this means turning over, getting a block to fit in her hand JUST right so she can pick it up, reaching the toys on her exersaucer.
The way she twirls her pacifier around trying to get it in her mouth. I try to let her do it herself.
When I pick her up for a nighttime feeding and she leaves her eyes closed and just opens her mouth, knowing mommy will take care of everything.

More of those "little" things...
The look on her face when I come home from work.
The way she kicks her legs when she's excited.
That moment she decides she's ready to go to sleep and she just turns in to me.
Her cute little bottom up in the air when she's asleep on her tummy.
The twinkle in her eye right before she tries to grab something.

I'm still here...
This baby girl is a handful to keep up with...and she’s not even crawling yet! She’s trying though. She’s really good at scooting and creeping. Next weekend is Isla Proofing the House Weekend. She has both bottom front teeth and is working on the top ones. She was Princess Fussy Pants last weekend but has been in a better mood the last day or so. Last night I could feel a nub on top even though you can’t see it yet.
I got a new laptop for my birthday/anniversary so I need to install my camera software and organize some pictures this weekend. I’ll upload some new ones then. I have a cute video I’ll try to get uploaded also.
I’m taking off Friday so it’s a 3 day weekend! J is going to hang out with us tomorrow afternoon and spend the night tomorrow night. He’s 8 and SO good with his little cousin. I was worried that he’d be jealous or have a hard time adjusting because this is the first time he’s really had to share Grandma’s attention but there was no reason to be concerned. He loves playing big brother and she adores him. We’re going to see Ramona and Beezus tomorrow afternoon. I loved those books when I was a kid. He hasn’t read them but wants to see the movie. The 3 of us have seen a few movies this summer—Isla does really well. She’ll watch about half the movie, take a bottle, then go to sleep.
One thing I’ve been trying to do lately is keep a journal of letters for Isla. I’ve only been able manage to write a few and I feel like I’m saying the same things over and over. I hope someday she’ll understand how my day automatically brightens whenever I see her and how I see pure joy on my mom’s face whenever she picks Isla up and how much her Daddy absolutely adores her. But I don’t think I’ll ever be able to convey to her how much I love her. Maybe it’s something she won’t be able to understand unless some day she’s blessed with her own little girl.
I’m writing this in the early hours of the morning. I’ve been thinking about all the little things no one ever told me. Sure, I knew the mommy job was a good gig even though it’s a lot of work. But I find joy in so many little things now that I never would have dreamt of.
Like the way it feels when she cuddles up against my chest in her dimly lit room at 3:00 in the morning. Everything so quiet and peaceful—like everyone else in the world is asleep but us. I love wearing a nightgown with a wide, open neck instead of my old t-shirts so I can feel her snuggle against my skin.
And the way she smells right after a bath. The smell of HER mixed with the scent of the lotion I rub on her arms and legs mixed with the lingering aroma of her shampoo clinging to those beautiful curls.
And how if she starts crying at 2:00 in the morning, part of me wants to just roll over and sleep but a bigger part of me smiles because it means I get to spend some hidden time with my baby girl. The more active she gets during the day, the more I love that time when she’s sleepy and drowsy and wants to cuddle.
And how much I love rocking her to sleep and just holding her. Even though I know she needs to learn how to soothe herself and put herself to sleep, it’s hard to let her do it sometimes. Sometimes I have to selfishly just sit and rock her and take all of her in. I know it won’t be long when she’s too big for mommy to rock her to sleep.
And how I feel warm and smiley inside those times when she just wants mommy and no one else will do. I know it won’t last but for now, Mommy is her favorite. If no one else can fix things, mommy can.
And how she’ll stick her right hand under my arm when she’s taking a bottle. As she moves her fingers, it seems like she’s trying to tickle me.
And the way she giggles when I kiss her cheeks.
And how she grins whenever she sneezes twice. Doesn’t always happen if she just sneezes once, but if she sneezes twice, she gets the biggest smile on her face and mommy says “those are so funny!”
And how mommy loves that she’s active, even when it means that it takes twice as long to change a diaper. I told her daddy when she was only a few days old that the way she squirmed on the changing table then, it was obvious that she was going to be a handful at 6 months. It’s 6 months later and you have to give her something to play with when you’re trying to change her diaper. Even then she flips over onto her tummy and tries to get away half the time. Mommy’s changed some diapers with her on her tummy but for some reason, she tends to pee when I’m doing that.
And how she raspberries me when I’m trying to clean her teeth and gums.
And how much she loves when we clap or cheer “Yay Isla!”
And, and, and.....I could go on and on. I’m sure my next few posts will be ones I remember and want to add. I just can’t believe how much of my life is wrapped up in that little girl.
Friday is P and my 3rd anniversary. That day 3 years ago will always be one of my perfect days. So peaceful and relaxing. I love you honey.

So much going on, so little time to blog....
So much going on in Isla's world these days. A tooth popped out last week (July 8th for when I go back and add it on her first year calendar)! It's a bottom tooth and so far, it doesn't have any friends showing up.
So much personality is also popping out these days. Isla definitely has her preferences and is learning how to communicate those well.
Stranger anxiety seems to be coming and going--some days she does okay at child care at the gym or the church nursery, but other days she screams. She's also taken to voicing her objection if mommy comes home from work and walks out of site without picking her up.
We made it to 6 months with a little over 6 pound weight gain over birth weight. We haven't doubled our birth weight yet but we're gaining consistently. We go to the doctor Thursday morning for our 6 month check-up. She's taking 25-30 ounces of formula a day, plus some solids. She was topping 30 most days but slacked off when....SHE STARTED SLEEPING THROUGH THE NIGHT!!
She's also able to sit up on her own for (very) short periods of time. We've been practicing!
She goes to bed around 6:30 or 7. If she hasn't gotten up for one last bottle before I go to bed at 10, I get her up for a bottle then (which doesn't always wake her up totally). She's usually good until 5:30 or 6 after that. We've had a couple off nights in the past few nights but for the most part, sleeping is very good!
I washed all Isla's 6-9 month clothes today. Most of them are summer outfits. I totally expected her to be wearing that size by now and most are probably still too big. We have a ton of sleepers for this fall but mommy might have to buy a couple more going out/church clothes.
More pictures and some video to post in a few days.

Sushi!
I went to a sushi making class that the nutritionist at HealthPoint did Monday night. Last night I had to stop at Schnucks and buy a bamboo mat, some seaweed, sushi rice.... My sushi attempts last night were a little messy but tasty. I tried again tonight and did 100% better. I thought about taking pictures tonight but 1. I have a bunch of pictures already to download, 2. the camera is in my car and I was too lazy to go get it, and 3. I figure next time will be even better!
Saturday we're going to St. Louis to see friends and go to specialty grocery stores. I can't wait!
And Isla update--she figured out how screeching happens today and kept exercising her screech!

Rollin', teethin' and raspberries
As of last weekend, we can roll both ways. Isla put herself on her tummy Sunday night and slept all night long. Most nights since then, however, she's repeatedly awakened herself trying to roll over and get comfy. Last night she was up several times and has been pretty cranky off and on today--since gnawing on my fingers is the most comforting activity, I suspect she's having some teething pain.
Raspberries are a source of entertainment for us this weekend. She loves to look at us, stick out her tongue and spit. It's so darn cute!

Size matters....
Isla wore primarly newborn clothes until she was over 3 months old. Most of our 0-3 month clothes were winter items so I had to pick up a few warm weather outfits in that size (darn--mommy had to shop!). Last week those were suddenly too small and we're wearing mostly 3-6 month clothes now! And yesterday I realized she had a big stash of 3-6 month clothes in her closet with the tags on them still so now we have a whole new wardrobe.
She a little piggy yesterday but I think it caught up to her today. We still have to thicken her formula with oatmeal--she won't take it without any cereal in it. Increased formula means increased cereal which means increased fiber which means belly ache. Poor baby has been fussy and gasy today. I've been trying to put as little cereal in the bottle as possible because I've been afraid of fiber bombing her belly with the oatmeal. She ate some prunes after church today (yumm-o)so hopefully something will happen when she wakes up from her nap.
Isla has really started laughing out loud the past week or so. Her cousin J can really get her laughing. He's been hanging out with Grandma for a few weeks this summer so he's been helping babysit. He went to the mall with me and Isla yesterday and was a great help to have around.
The big thing on my things to do list is to start teaching. I finished my Masters Degree last summer and am going to start teaching a class for an online school hopefully next month (gotta complete their training program and officially get hired--training starts this weekend). I hope I like it and they like me. If it goes well, some serious consideration will be given to the employment situation. Part of the reason I finished my Masters was so I could explore teaching. The idea of being at home more keeps getting more and more appealing as Isla becomes more and more aware of things. But I still need to start deciding what we want to do daycare-wise after the beginning of the year when the grandmas' contracts are up.
More later. STILL need to upload some video!

4 month check-up
23 1/4 inches, 11 pounds 6 ounces. Still at less than 10th percentile but we're still on the growth chart and made a little progress on her curve. People keep saying she looks so long but height is also at less than 10th percentile. Guess she just looks long cause she's skinny. Meanwhile her head is around 66th percentile. The doctor was thrilled with how alert Isla was and her motor skills. I've been meaning to look at a copy of the Denver Development chart to see how we're doing on there--I think we're doing good though!

Tastes great, less filling!
The feet found their way to the mouth today. I came home to find a baby with wet socks.

Rolling, rolling, rolling....
Isla has always hated tummy time. She did a few push ups a few weeks ago but she wouldn't do them on a regular basis. But last night I laid her in the floor on her tummy and she immediately went into push up position. Within 60 seconds she was on her back. She did it again as I went to get the video camera. Then she did it for the camera and a few more times. She did it a few times for Grandma this morning too.
We've also tried new foods. Pears are okay. Not bad but not a favorite. Avocado was also okay. She liked it better with pears. But squash? Squash? YUMM-O! That baby can chow down on some squash! She would have kept eating it this evening if I would have gotten her seconds but I didn't want to give her too much since she's just started eating "solids."
And mommy finally got a laugh. Daddy says it was a grunt, but I say it was a laugh. We were playing, she was smiling, and it was Mother's Day. That was her gift to mommy.
Still need to post new photos. I also need to upload some videos too.

New toys!!
It's hard to keep up with all the changes in Isla the past few weeks. Everyday she's grabbing more, kicking more, talking more, and coming closer to flipping over.
She found her feet last weekend and has two new favorite toys. She's also been reaching and grabbing her other toys more and more. She loves to lay on her play mat and reach up to the toys hanging down. She'll grab ahold of them and pull. Tonight she was getting mad because she couldn't grasp the ball hanging over her head.
Eating is going a lot better and she's up to 11 pounds. We're still on the low end of the growth curve but I think she's gained a little on her curve since our last doctor's visit. We go next Thursday for our 4 month check and shots.
There have been times lately I just want to walk out of work and go get Isla, find her Daddy at work, and just hug them both. I can't believe how much I love this little girl and my wonderful P.
More later--I have pictures of Isla with her great grandparents that I want to add here.
